Dear General Mills,
Please reject glufosinate-tolerant GMO wheat. We are asking you to live up to your claims working towards a healthier planet.
Herbicide-tolerant GMO crops have greatly increased our exposure to these agrotoxins. So far, most of the herbicide-tolerant crops have been used for highly-processed food ingredients, mostly sweeteners and seed oils as well as animal feed and ethanol.
Because of these GMO crops, we’ve been exposed to more of the herbicide glyphosate (Monsanto’s Roundup) than any other pesticide. Now, thousands of U.S. farmers have non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and Bayer, which merged with Monsanto and dropped its infamous name in 2018, is paying billions to Roundup-exposed cancer victims.
Monsanto wanted to commercialize glyphosate-tolerant GMO wheat, but gave that up in 2004 in the face of stiff opposition from farmers.
Now, Bioceres, an Argentine company that Monsanto invested in, is renewing the effort with wheat that is genetically engineered to withstand a different herbicide, glufosinate, that is 5 times more toxic than glyphosate and has been banned in the European Union since 2013.
On August 27, 2024, President Joe Biden’s Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said U.S. farmers could grow Biocere’s GMO wheat.
Bimbo, the largest bakery company in the world, announced in May of this year that they would go GMO Free. General Mills you need to make this commitment as well.
As a first step to stop all use of GMOs and go organic, we ask that you pledge to reject this newly approved GMO wheat.
Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter.
