Ban Roundup, Don’t Bail Out Bayer!

On February 19, 2025, an Iowa Senate committee passed a bill that would shield Bayer from cancer lawsuits.

Bayer is the only U.S. maker of glyphosate, the active ingredient in the herbicide Roundup. Bayer manufactures 70% of North America's Roundup in Muscatine, Iowa. Iowa has the second-highest cancer rate in the country, according to the 2024 Iowa Cancer Registry. The cancer registry predicted that 6,100 people will die in Iowa from cancer this year. Richard Deming, a cancer physician in Des Moines, says “there’s clear association between ag chemical exposure in the state of Iowa and cancer incidence.”

In 2020, Bayer agreed to pay roughly $10 billion in a landmark settlement with Roundup-exposed cancer victims. Yet tens of thousands of additional claims remain unresolved. Bayer is on the hook for billions of dollars more for acting with “malice, oppression or fraud” to hide the fact that the glyphosate-based herbicide the company acquired when it bought Monsanto causes non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Legislators in several other states, including Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and Tennessee are also trying to help Bayer escape liability.

Since 2015, when the World Health Organization’s (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) unanimously determined that glyphosate is a probable human carcinogen, no state has taken action to ban Roundup.

Bayer is a German company with Nazi roots. As a foreign corporation, it’s not allowed to make political contributions. Buying Monsanto changed all of that. Now that it has a U.S. subsidiary, it too can buy politicians just like American companies do.

Bayer is now one of the top companies engaged in the legal bribery we call lobbying and campaign contributions.

Let’s make Bayer the number-one company that state legislators hear complaints about!

Dear State Legislator,

Ban Glyphosate, Don't Bail Out Bayer!

In 2015, a panel of 17 scientists at the World Health Organization’s (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), after reviewing the latest science on glyphosate, the main ingredient in Monsanto (now Bayer)’s Roundup weedkiller, unanimously agreed to reclassify the chemical as a probable human carcinogen.

Meanwhile, the Environmental Protection Agency has chosen to ignore IARC and the jury verdicts, relying on unpublished, industry-funded studies to determine that glyphosate is “Not Likely to be Carcinogenic to Humans.” The EPA has been Monsanto's partner in crime since it reversed the 1985 consensus position of eight EPA scientists that glyphosate was a Class C carcinogen.

Yet, the evidence that glyphosate causes cancer is strong:

* Increased rates of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma have been found in occupational exposure studies of workers who handled glyphosate in the US, Canada and Sweden.

* Cancers of the kidney, blood vessels, stomach and skin have been observed in laboratory studies of rats and mice exposed to glyphosate.

* Our bodies absorb glyphosate. This is indicated by the fact that glyphosate is found in the blood and urine of not only agricultural workers but also people in urban areas who are exposed to glyphosate through the food they eat.

* Our intestinal microbes metabolize glyphosate just like soil microbes do. When people are poisoned by glyphosate, aminomethylphosphoric acid (AMPA), a metabolite of glyphosate that’s found in contaminated soil and water, is found in their blood.

* Glyphosate and Roundup induce DNA and chromosomal damage in mammals, and in human and animal cells in vitro.

* Glyphosate, Roundup and AMPA induce oxidative stress in rodents and in vitro.

It's time to open your eyes to the suffering of Americans who have or will get cancer because of exposure to Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide.

Please work to ban Roundup and all glyphosate-based herbicides.

Please oppose efforts to help Bayer escape liability for the deaths and injuries it is responsible for.
